15th and 16th century Europe, in particular Italy, saw a great surge in artistic activity and achievement amidst the emergence of Humanism and a surge of intense interest in learning and the early stages of science. The period was later labelled the Renaissance and it continues to inspire study and debate today. In the class we will think about some of the major developments in art during the Renaissance, and consider the cultural and political environment that helped bring us these achievements. We will also look in some detail at some important examples of art produced during this period. The class will be in English, with the instructor introducing the topic of each lesson while leaving lots of room for students to ask questions, introduce artworks they are particularly interested in, and share their own opinions. There will be no textbook as such, we will use various resources freely available on the Internet. This class, The Culture of the Renaissance, is the first class in the new art history course, Art In Sight. In this course we will look at various kinds and periods of art from a range of perspectives — aesthetic, personal, historical and political/social. We will explore such questions as What is art? How do we define it and evaluate it ? What distinguishes art from craft or other human activities? What meanings does, or can, art have ? After we have looked at the Renaissance we will hold classes on other aspects of art, such as Impressionism, Baroque, Modern Art, etc. [リンクはこちら](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut-e40u3lS0) *First of all, the word “renaissance” means a “revival” — what was the Italian Renaissance a revival of ? *In the first few minutes of the video, the presenter, Rick Steves, says “Florence was the birthplace of our modern western world”.
