英国の作家が発表した最高の短編小説をまとめた「Best British Short Stories 」は、毎年刊行されています。 今期も「Best British Short Stories 2024」 を読んでいきます。2025年4月期講読開始。 英語で話し合いながら、作品に描かれているイギリス文化への理解を深めます。授業は英語で行います。

アイルランドは地理的には小さい国ですが、四人のノーベル文学賞受賞者や20世紀最大の文学者ジェームス・ジョイスを輩出している文学大国です。その背景には古代から現代まで地下水のように脈々と流れる伝承文学の流れがあります。 十数年前からシリーズで、写本に残る神話や英雄伝を英語で読む講座を続けてきました。20世紀の伝承学者ケヴィン・ダナハーが身近な農民たちから直接聴いた土の匂いのする民話集『アイルランドの田舎の話』(Folktales from the Irish Countryside)等の原書をテキストに読んでいます。これらの話を通してアイルランドの農民たちの暮らしや気質を直接知ることになるでしょう。美しい田園風景の中に繰り広げられる想像力豊かなユーモアたっぷりの物語をお楽しみください。英語が苦手な方は聴講してくださるだけでも結構です。ぜひご参加ください。（講師・記）

"ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN"はTOM SAWYERのお話しが終わったところから始まります。共に著作はMARK TWAINです。（昔このお話しを読んだり、HUCKの名前を知っている方も多いかもしれません）。この作品は19世紀アメリカ南部で、社会の常識や規範を嫌って自由を求めて生きていくHUCKのお話しで、現代アメリカ文学の源泉とも言われます。オリジナルの挿絵がついているテキストでHUCKの旅をご一緒に読んでいきましょう。（講師：記） ※2025年4月期講読開始。

　This year is over 150 of the birth of the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Apart from poetry, he wrote plays, a number of which were born from his encounter with No drama, and some of his poems, too, allude to Japan and Japanese people and things. In these five classes, we will read together some of Yeats’s most famous poems, from the earliest to the poems he wrote shortly before his death in 1939. Missing Microbes, by Martin J. Blaser, MD, is a book with several very important messages regarding health trends in today’s world. Having just finished reading a non-fiction book focusing on viruses, our class will now study another type of microbes, bacteria, and the many known and unknown effects of the "miracle drugs" known as antibiotics that have been used increasingly in our lifetimes to combat infectious diseases. 俳優でもあり数々のシェイクスピア劇のプロデューサー、ディレクターを務める講師が解説します。現在は「オセロー」を読みすすめています。 In this course, I shall be choosing speeches from one play at a time, in a way which I hope will allow students to understand the whole course of the play. The speeches may be soliloquies (一人台詞) or speeches addressed to others. Some will be very famous speeches, others not so famous, but all will be relevant to a proper understanding of the play. I shall also include, on occasion, some exchanges between characters. We shall be starting on ‘Othello’. I shall explain the speeches, and also describe the dramatic situation in which the characters speak. In this way, I hope you will learn about some very good speeches, about the play as a whole, and about how the play appears on the stage. 　日本生まれのイギリスの小説家、Kazuo Ishiguroは1954年長崎市に生まれる。幼少時は長崎で育つが、1960年に両親と共にイギリスに移住。1974年ケント大学英文科へ、1980年イースト・アングリア大学大学院創作学科に進み小説活動を始めた。1982年、処女作『遠い山なみの光』（Faber and Faber社より出版）で彗星のごとく現れ王立文学協会賞を受賞、第３作『日の名残り』(1989年）で英語圏最高の文学賞・ブッカー賞を受賞。その後、ノーベル文学賞を受賞（2017年）した小説家。 　『日の名残り』の小説手法の萌芽を見るような、英国に在住する長崎女性・悦子の回想を語り口とした幻想的、かつミステリアアスに描いた女の心理や情緒の起伏を子供・若い女性・成熟した女に投影し物語を進めていく。時を交錯させ、長崎やイギリスなどロケーションとシーンを自由に往き来させながら精緻に描写していく筆使いは見事である。淡々と愛や死などを日常生活の中に潜伏させその深淵を読者に覗かせる作品は、まさに「日本的」とか「能面の世界」という批評を感じさせる。精読の愉しい時間を共に味わいましょう。（講師記） ※2026年1月講読開始。進捗状況はお問合せください。辞書を引きながらでも読める方が対象です。

In this course, we shall be studying speeches from Shakespeare’s plays as well as selected sonnets by Shakespeare. We shall study both the meaning of the texts I have chosen and how to read them aloud ? and students will be expected to read them aloud! Regarding the plays, I shall be taking one play at a time, and choosing speeches in the order that they appear so that the structure of the play may be brought out. 長期に亘って大戦間の米国作家の長・短編小説をヘミングウェイを中心に精読してきましたが、この辺りで気分を変えて、日本でも『人間の絆』（Of Human Bondage, 1915）等でよく知られている英国の作家、Somerset Maugham（1874-1965）の短編“The Fall of Edward Barnard”（1921）を読みます。舞台はシカゴ。米国の金融資本主義経済の枠組みの中で、莫大な富と華麗な生活を保証されていたEdward Barnardの身に何が起こったのか、タイトルにある「fall（転落、凋落）」を念頭に読み進めたい。テキストはプリントを用意します。（講師・記）

English is a Germanic language and belongs to the greater Indo-European language family. Of all the language families in the world, this is by far the largest. In it are found some of the most important languages of the world – English, French, Spanish Russian and many more. As the name indicates, these languages span both Asia and Europe. Their original homeland was perhaps Iran and northern India (the so-called “Aryan” branch) of which the most ancient and famous is Sanskrit. Some Indo-European languages such as English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch, because of colonial expansion, have become the main languages of Africa, North and South America and Australasia. The family in Europe today has several sub-branches of which three are most important, namely Romance or Italic, Germanic and Slavic. Smaller sub-branches include Hellenic, Celtic, Baltic and Albanian. This course will concentrate on Romance, Germanic and Slavic and some of the cultural and religious differences that are associated with these groups. We shall look at some of the grammatical and phonological differences as for example the First Sound Shift, as well as related vocabulary. （講師・記） ・授業は英語で行います。
