This year is the 157th of the birth of the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Apart from poetry, he wrote plays, a number of which were born from his encounter with No drama, and some of his poems, too, allude to Japan and Japanese people and things. In these five classes, we will read together some of Yeats’s most famous poems, from the earliest to the poems he wrote shortly before his death in 1939. We shall pay particular attention to their ‘musical’ qualities, and perhaps listen to settings of his poems by composers like Benjamin Britten and Peter Warlock. ノーベル文学賞を受賞したアイルランドの詩人、ウィリアム・バトラー・イェイツが生まれて150年以上。イェイツの詩を英語で読みます。解説も英語で行います。

英国の作家が発表した最高の短編小説をまとめた「Best British Short Stories 」は、毎年刊行されています。 今期も「Best British Short Stories 2021」 を読んでいきます。まもなく読了予定ですので、2025年4月期の途中から「Best British Short Stories 2024」を読みます。 英語で話し合いながら、作品に描かれているイギリス文化への理解を深めます。授業は英語で行います。

５〜７年を隔てて発表された秀作、“The Killers”(1926)、“A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” (1933)、”Old Man at the Bridge”(1938)の3編を読み、舞台になった当時の社会的背景を考慮しつつ、作品の本質に迫りたい。 なお、この３作品では、ヘミングウェイ文学の特徴の一つである会話（dialogue）の連なりが多用されており、そうした効果も考察の対象にしたい。いつもの通り、活発な議論の場になれば、と期待しています。テキストはプリントを用意します。（講師・記）

In this course, we shall be studying speeches from Shakespeare’s plays as well as selected sonnets by Shakespeare. We shall study both the meaning of the texts I have chosen and how to read them aloud ? and students will be expected to read them aloud! Regarding the plays, I shall be taking one play at a time, and choosing speeches in the order that they appear so that the structure of the play may be brought out. アイルランドは地理的には小さい国ですが、四人のノーベル文学賞受賞者や20世紀最大の文学者ジェームス・ジョイスを輩出している文学大国です。その背景には古代から現代まで地下水のように脈々と流れる伝承文学の流れがあります。 十数年前からシリーズで、写本に残る神話や英雄伝を英語で読む講座を続けてきました。20世紀の伝承学者ケヴィン・ダナハーが身近な農民たちから直接聴いた土の匂いのする民話集『アイルランドの田舎の話』(Folktales from the Irish Countryside)等の原書をテキストに読んでいます。これらの話を通してアイルランドの農民たちの暮らしや気質を直接知ることになるでしょう。美しい田園風景の中に繰り広げられる想像力豊かなユーモアたっぷりの物語をお楽しみください。英語が苦手な方は聴講してくださるだけでも結構です。ぜひご参加ください。（講師・記）

　ペンギン・ベスト・コレクションの選定にある「眺めのいい部屋」(A Room With A View)は、E .M.Forsterの代表作です。フォースターはケンブリッジ大学で学び、文学者活動Bloomsburury Groupに参加し、後年文壇の長老として勲章を授与された英国の小説家です。主人公がイタリアのフィレンツェを訪れ自由で開放的な青年に出逢い、己の中にもあった繊細で自由な心に気づいていく心の葛藤を、封建的な英国貴族社会の衰退を背景として描いております。小説の最後で”・・・they heard the river, bearing down the snows of winter into the Mediterranian.”と述べ、時代の流れの中で溶けて愛に目覚め、真の自分の心を掴むことを象徴的に語りかけているのが、作者の特徴を示し印象深い読み物となっております。皆様と楽しく読んで参りましょう。（講師記） ※2025年1月講読開始。進捗状況はお問合せください。辞書を引きながらでも読める方が対象です。

　Do you think the world has changed a lot in the past 400 years? Not so! 　Robert Burton says playfully that he wrote his 900-page treatise (first edition, 1621) to avoid suffering from melancholia (now called clinical depression). Read The Anatomy of Melancholy with us; you’ll be surprised at how much we share -- in medicine, philosophy, politics, law, commerce, religion, and every variety of human experience -- with this erudite 17th-century Englishman. 　Introduce yourself to elegant early modern English, Latin, and a little bit of Greek by reading his sui generis (one-of-a-kind) classic in the original languages. Why be afraid of Latin? As your familiarity with today’s scientific terminology and your understanding of today’s nomenclature of advanced technology improve, you will realize how deep go modern medicine’s linguistic roots. Even in advertising and law, terms derived from Latin and ancient Greek are in everyday use. 　The educated elites of Burton’s time conversed and corresponded in Latin (as they do now in English) in the fields of science, literature, and culture. He wrote The Anatomy of Melancholy in spicy academic post-Shakespearean English mixed with his own Latin; in five editions revised and expanded during his lifetime, he crammed his labor of love with ever more quotations from Roman and Greek authors that he knew well and added thousands of references and marginal notes in English and Latin. 　Every challenge to human existence, from invasions of alien armies to love, grief, and plagues (think "pandemic"), is described in The Anatomy of Melancholy in ways that have delighted readers for centuries. 　We will use an inexpensive, yet complete, e-book edition containing the entire magnum opus. Humour is way of causing laughter and is present on a universal scale. It is found everywhere and is limited to the human race and thus connected with language. Humour however can also be seen outside of language, as in gestures, art, music etc, In this course we shall try to define humour and to look and its various forms. We shall discuss the wide range of humour: that used by children and primitive people and then turn to a kind of humour known as “wit” which appeals to more educated and sober people. Humour has also been treated by philosophers. For Plato it had its origin in ugliness. For Bacon it was a kind of deformity. For Spencer it was the emotions and sensations which generated bodily movements and this idea continued in Freud as a release from repressed emotions. Various kinds of humour will be discussed. These will include jokes, puns, spoonerisms, comic verse, parody etc. Although humour is universal, there also particular kinds of humour used in various countries. We shall particularly look at European humour - and particularly English humour- as opposed to Japanese humour. （講師・記） ・授業は英語で行います。

Reading Non-Fiction in English Missing Microbes, by Martin J. Blaser, MD, is a book with several very important messages regarding health trends in today’s world. Having just finished reading a non-fiction book focusing on viruses, our class will now study another type of microbes, bacteria, and the many known and unknown effects of the "miracle drugs" known as antibiotics that have been used increasingly in our lifetimes to combat infectious diseases. Dr Blaser presents a convincing case that the widespread use and overuse of antibiotics and their effects on our "microbiome" (the trillions of microbes that live inside and on us – and protect us) have a role in the global spread of asthma and allergies, diabetes, obesity – and even ever taller adult height. Written in a friendly mixture of colloquial and scientific vocabulary to make full comprehension easier for all readers, Missing Microbes is fair-minded toward everyone involved in modern medicine, from pharmaceutical manufacturers and clinicians to patients and their families, from infants to the elderly, urging people in every country to use antibiotics more selectively, cautiously, and wisely. （講師・記） Martin J. 　近年、アメリカやイギリスでも、教会に通うキリスト教信者の数がかなり減少しているといわれるが、それでもイギリスでは、家庭の少なくとも80％には英訳聖書が一冊は備えられているという。聖書は実際に読まれているかどうかは別にして、いまだに隠れたベストセラーの一つである。 　キリスト教がブリテン島に本格的に伝わるのは6世紀後半以降であるが、1000年ごろ福音書の英訳が行われ、それ以降『ウィクリフ派聖書』（14世紀末）、『ジェームズ王聖書』（1611年）など数多くの英訳聖書が現れている。本講座では、異なる時代に翻訳された英訳聖書を比較しながら読み、英語の歴史的発達の跡を辿っていくが、同時に英語を歴史的に遡ることで現代英語に見られるさまざまな不思議・不規則も解き明かしていきたい。（講師・記）
