This year is over 150 of the birth of the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Apart from poetry, he wrote plays, a number of which were born from his encounter with No drama, and some of his poems, too, allude to Japan and Japanese people and things. In these five classes, we will read together some of Yeats’s most famous poems, from the earliest to the poems he wrote shortly before his death in 1939. We shall pay particular attention to their ‘musical’ qualities, and perhaps listen to settings of his poems by composers like Benjamin Britten and Peter Warlock. ノーベル文学賞を受賞したアイルランドの詩人、ウィリアム・バトラー・イェイツが生まれて150年以上。イェイツの詩を英語で読みます。解説も英語で行います。

『人間の絆』（Of Human Bondage, 1915）や『月と六ペンス』(The Moon and Sixpence, 1919）等で日本でもよく知られている英国の作家、Somerset Maugham（1874-1965）の短編“The Fall of Edward Barnard”（1921）を続けて読みます。舞台はシカゴ。米国の金融資本主義経済の枠組みの中で、莫大な富と華麗な生活を保証されていたEdward Barnardの身に何が起こったのか、タイトルにある「fall（転落、凋落）」を念頭に読み進めます。テキストはプリントを用意します。（講師・記）

In this course, we shall be studying speeches from Shakespeare’s plays as well as selected sonnets by Shakespeare. We shall study both the meaning of the texts I have chosen and how to read them aloud ? and students will be expected to read them aloud! Regarding the plays, I shall be taking one play at a time, and choosing speeches in the order that they appear so that the structure of the play may be brought out. Missing Microbes, by Martin J. Blaser, MD, is a book with several very important messages regarding health trends in today’s world. Having just finished reading a non-fiction book focusing on viruses, our class will now study another type of microbes, bacteria, and the many known and unknown effects of the "miracle drugs" known as antibiotics that have been used increasingly in our lifetimes to combat infectious diseases. Dr Blaser presents a convincing case that the widespread use and overuse of antibiotics and their effects on our "microbiome" (the trillions of microbes that live inside and on us – and protect us) have a role in the global spread of asthma and allergies, diabetes, obesity – and even ever taller adult height. The speeches may be soliloquies (一人台詞) or speeches addressed to others. Some will be very famous speeches, others not so famous, but all will be relevant to a proper understanding of the play. I shall also include, on occasion, some exchanges between characters. We shall be starting on ‘The Winters Tale ’. I shall explain the speeches, and also describe the dramatic situation in which the characters speak. In this way, I hope you will learn about some very good speeches, about the play as a whole, and about how the play appears on the stage. A proverb is a short pithy saying in which there is a general truth. The proverb has many forms such as the maxim or the aphorism but is basically a comparison. Proverbs express basis truths often in the form of a metaphor, so that sometimes they may be understood quite literally but usually also on a higher abstract level, as for example, “new brooms sweep clean”. A proverb does not usually change its form and must be repeated exactly as it is. This has led some to think of the proverb as a stereotype or cliché. A proverb will often contain rhetorical figures such as alliteration, rhyme, repetition etc. Proverbs are found in all languages and therefore form a universal element of language. Just as all languages are different, the proverb will often express a thought which is unique to one particular language. In this course we shall concentrate mainly on the proverbs of the English language with occasional comparisons with Japanese proverbs which often have a quite different way of thinking from the English.　 （講師・記） ・授業は英語で行います。
